History of Eleebana

Name Origin:

Aboriginal: quiet, peaceful place; or sweet, fragrant; or beauty. It appears to have been named at time of subdivision, possibly by H.F. Halloran.

Aboriginal Occupation:

There was a campsite at the northern end of Croudace Bay.

Early Land Grants:

This suburb lay at the northern boundary of Threlkeld's original Bahtahbah grant, and was just south of Warner's 1280 acres. Portion 40 of 15 8 acres, (Kahibah Parish) was granted to G.L. Yorston; Portion 41 of 167 acres to J.B. Watt; and Portion 42 of 194 acres to Thomas Adam.

Early Subdivisions:

D.P.10798 was subdivided by Henry F. Halloran as "Eleebana Point Estate". This was part of Thomas Adam's Portion 42 covering Paroo Avenue, Pannamena Crescent, Birubi Close and Toonibal Avenue. It was declared on 19 July 1918. Twenty years later, in 1938, Wyee Ltd, another Henry F. Halloran company, subdivided the remainder of Portion 42, including the top of the hill. J.B. Watt's Portion 41, including Croft Road and Harkins Road, D.P.25476 was subdivided in 1951 and further divided in 1953.

Early Settlers:

The land was poor and steep and unsuitable for agriculture and remained unsettled. However, as was usual in those times, Halloran sold boatshed leases on the waterfront fronting Croudace Bay and sheds were built there and occupied during the summer. The council had difficulty in negotiating their removal after World War 11. Their sites were eventually added to Thomas H. Halton Park, Croudace Bay.

Early Industries:

There was no industry.

Early Transport:

The bus service to Speers Point and Warners Bay was extended to give a minimum service to Eleebana after the second world war.

First Post Office:

Opened 1 November 1948; closed 29 December 1973. It was in a shop at the bottom of Eleebana Road, near the waterfront.

First School:

Opened in January 1955 as a provisional school. It became a public school in September of the same year.

Water Supply:

1948.
